MCPSS Career Technical Centers provide hands-on training in skills students can use to take advantage of plentiful jobs in the trades. One such program at Faulkner Career Tech Center is masonry, where students learn the skills necessary to lay brick, cinder block and tile. Jon McIlwain's family owns a construction company, but he's always enjoyed working on cars. When he came to Faulkner Career Technical Center, the Mary G. Montgomery senior found his passion in collision repair. "I really like having a car come in that's completely totaled," he said. "I like making them look brand new again." When he's not working on cars, he plays guitar in a band with his cousins. With the skills he's honed at Faulkner, he's currently interviewing with several local collision repair shops and is looking forward to starting his career after graduation. #LearningLeading #PerseverancePropelsProgress

Ron Rankin has been teaching carpentry at Faulkner Career Technical Center for 15 years. He's a longtime cabinet maker who learned the trade working in his father's cabinet shop and is now teaching those skills to the next generation. From learning how to use power tools to reading building plans and seeing those plans through to completion, his students are gaining skills that will make them marketable in an industry where skilled workers are in demand.
